Harvesting Apples

Apple picking in the fall we carry home heavy baskets of crunchy sweetness. We make our pilgrimage every year to Solebury Orchards to honor the earth and the food she provides before the onset of winter. So much of our food is delivered to our markets and stores, even to our door. Its wonderful to remember that somewhere our meals are growing, and support our local farmers working hard to keep their place in our food chain.

Feast of Mabon

Fall equinox arrives during the busy busy busy time of the year. Work, play, sports, and beautiful fall weather make the weeks pass so quickly. On Mabon we slow down, at least for a few hours, to share in our harvest. Reflecting on the joys and accomplishments of the year so far, we recognize that the increasing darkness brings different hopes and dreams. We start to stay closer to home this time of year, and plan for the winter calm.

This year we shared a beautiful meal, decorated our home in fall trappings, and even were visited by a few witches.

Menu: Spinach Salad with Apples and Walnuts; Roast Beef and Vegetable Medley (onions, potatoes, carrots, celery, mushrooms); Corn; Pumpkin Pie; Apple Pandowdy.

Ren Faire Love

The first event we consider a “fall event” is the Wrightstown Faire. A small, fancifully done medieval fair, it brings us into the whimsical time of knights and dragons, castles and battles.  Entertaining activities and tents to explore for shopping and learning bring us back each year. It have become an activity we mark the year by, and when I look back and see how much they’ve grown I’m so grateful they haven’t outgrown fantasies.

And, in our other life, we make soap. TheBestSoap. Natural, vegan, free of all the crap, blah blah blah. It’s awesome. www.nordicsoap.com
